This is a shorter walk but a very exciting one. So if you feel like an adventure but only have a couple hours, then this hike through the Üble Schlucht (evil gorge) might be just the thing. It does require you to be sure footed though! And there are signs warning of rock fall…
Start in Laterns Dorf at the Restaurant Löwen and follow the signs leading downhill into Üble Schlucht.
The path leads across some meadows before turning into the woods. There is a big sign warning you of the dangers of the gorge. Hence it being called evil gorge, so be aware that you are doing this hike on your own risk. To reach the gorge you need to get all the way down to the river, so the path is rather steep. It can be slippery, especially when not fully dry and the path is rather exposed in places along the steep slope, so be careful.
Once you reach the river you are in at the start of the gorge. Take your time to look around as it is rather impressive.
Keep following the path and the gorge will get even tighter. The walls above seem to almost be touching now. There is a small section that leads through a very low overhang, so watch your head. There is a handrail along most of the gorge to help keep hikers from slipping into the water.
After the overhang the gorge is getting slightly wider and there is a small pool. Should you feel like a swim, this would be the place for it.
Continue along the path and you will reach a lovely waterfall. Past the fall a steep set of stairs leads downhill. Soon after you will reach a small wooden bridge crossing the stream.
The path now starts leading uphill into the woods, so be sure to have a look back before leaving the evil gorge.
The path now leads uphill until you reach a gravel forest road. This road leads back towards Laterns above the gorge. Follow it until there is a sign to the left, leaving the road.
The path now leads back down to the stream. Cross the bridge at the bottom and then make your way uphill again on the other side. Don’t worry, there are only about 150 height meters to conquer before you are back in the village.
Make your way back to the Löwen restaurant, where you could stop for a refreshing drink and which also has a bus stop directly outside.
