Buchboden – Mutterwangjoch (2025m) – Hochkünzelspitze (2397m) – Buchboden
Beautiful hike in a less visited area of Grosses Walsertal
This is a beautifully quiet and long hike from the Grosses Walsertal. It passes by the historic Bad Rothenbrunnen and climbs over the Mutterwangjoch (2025m). There is then a gentle climb up to the Biberacher hut and finally up to the Hochkünzelspitze (2397m) for amazing views over the Vorarlberg Alps.
This is a circular hike starting from 800m east of Buchboden in Vorarlberg (western Austria).

This is a long hike for one day – so it can be split into 2 days with a stay in the perfectly located Biberacher hut. We started at the parking for the Bad Rothenbrunnen Alpine guesthouse just outside of Buchboden.
We followed the babbling river to the Gadenalpe – it’s an incredibly quiet area – nobody around.
It was then a steep hike up through the fields, past the Disnerbergalpe and the mandatory cows with bells until we reached the Mutterwangjoch. It was a beautiful place to have a well deserved break and enjoy the summer flowers and views.
It was then downhill towards the Alpschellaalpe – we passed some lovely waterfalls on the way.
Shortly after the alp, we turned right following the signs to the Biberacher hut. There were a few streams to cross – lovely to splash cold water on our faces on such a hot day!
The views become wider as we headed towards the Biberacher hut – absolutely stunning.
From the hut it was 1.5 hours up to the Hochkünzelspitz. The route was marked blue/white and signposted to be suitable for experienced hikers. There are wires to hang on to. It’s not too difficult, but care is needed. Once we reached the top we were rewarded with fantastic 360° views. Wonderful!
We then retraced our steps back to the hut. It was then a 2 hour downhill walk past the Ischkarneialpe. This was a lovely walk since the path stays high and has great views to the crumbling rocks of the Braunarlspitze mountain range opposite.
We arrived back at the car very tired after 8 hours of hiking. Maybe it would have been better to split the hike over 2 days – but it was beautiful!
