This hike has a great value for effort ratio. Not many height meters to the top of Salmaserhöhe but the views from the top are stunning. And since it is a ridge walk, the path stays along the top for quite a while so the views keep on staying great.
If you came by car, leave it at the bottom of the Alpsee Berwelt gondola and then take the bus to Salmas. From here walk up the road towards Salmaserhöhe. The road will be rather steep at first but the views soon open up and will distract you from the effort.
After about 45min the road leads into the forest and becomes less steep. Cross the forest and soon you will arrive at Salmaserhöhe. At this point you will already have done most of the height meters for this walk.
From Salmaserhöhe the path stays on the wide ridge, allowing views to all sides. There are hardly any height meters to do and not long after leaving Salmaserhöhe you will arrive at Ochsenschache. There is again a cross and a bench to sit and enjoy the view.
From Ochsenschache you will have a first view of Alpsee and in spring you might also see a collection of crocus up here.
The path continues along the ridge a bit further before turning slightly left onto a road. Turn right on the road and at the next fork, take the path in the middle. It will lead up to Thaler Höhe.
There is again a cross and a bench and great views from this point. From Thaler Höhe, the path continues along the ridge, somtimes through forrests and sometimes opening up for great views of the Allgäu hills to the north or the impressive Alps in the south.
At the next junction, the hike leads to the left. But first, make sure to go straight ahead to Seeblick which is a dead end path but also a great viewpoint over the lake. Chances to have this place for yourself are slim, but the view explains why it is such a favourite.
After having thoroughly enjoyed the view, turn back to the junction and turn right. Soon you will reach a road. Turn right on the road until the path to Siedalpe turns off right.
The path now leads through a wooded area until reaching a road again at Siedalpe. If you find a seat, this is a great place for a stop, but a stop here is only recommended if you are hav good resistance to noise and crowds.
From Siedalpe make your way towards Zaumberg, first staying on the ridge a bit longer, until slowly making your way downwards.
Walk into the village until the path turns off right and now starts going downhill steeper until reaching Alpsee.
Turn left and make your way along the northern shore of the lake. There is a very well maintained hiking path that leads along here. On the way there are plenty of opportunities for a dip in the lake, if you fancy a swim. There are also great views of the lake and the mountains in the distance.
At the end of the lake turn left and make your way back to the gondola if you have left your car here.
