The Starzlachklamm gorge and the Günten summit
Early December and no snow, so we decided on a hike through a freezing cold gorge to be amazed at ice formations and then thaw out by hiking to the summit of Grünten. A perfect late autumn's day hike!

It was early December and still no snow in sight, so we decided on a hike of two halved. Firstly through a freezing cold Starzlachklamm gorge which promised to amaze us with its ice formations and then to thaw out by hiking to the summit of Grünten. A perfect winter’s day hike!
We parked at Burgberg just outside of Sonthofen and entered the Starzlachklamm, the cold temperature already dropping further!
Its a really impressive narrow gorge with only a few steps, but do take care in winter – the path can be icy.
After the icy gorge we were rewarded with weak, but warming winter sunshine and headed uphill towards Grünten. It’s only 700 height meters and after a couple of hours we were quickly at the top. But being winter the sun was already dropping – but still fantastic views.
We hurried down again heading towards Sonthofen – still great views across the Alps of Allgäu.
A wonderful hike!
