Hiked by us on: 7th April 2018

Today we were spoilt for choice with  blue sky all around – what a beautiful day! We decided to head to Allgäu, southern Germany and hike along 2 wonderful broad ridges between Oberstaufen and Immenstadt.

We parked in the little village of Wiederhofen and headed up to Salmaser Höhe with its 360° views.

Look west and we can see Switzerland and Saentis. Beautiful!

We continue along the ridge pass Thaler Höhe thoroughly enjoying the views. Crocus and spring flowers everywhere!

After an hour along the ridge we head down, pass through the village of Knottenried and onto Diepolz.

If you are low on supplies, head into the Käserei (cheese shop) in Diepolz. We then head up again to the second ridge – Hauchenberg.

This ridge is slightly higher than the first, gently undulating – still great views to the Alps of southern Germany and west Austria.

Even though it is almost mid-April and we are only at 1200m, there is still a lot of snow – but nothing problematic on this easy hike.

Eventually we come down from the ridge, pass through the village of Missen and walk back to the car at Wiederhofen. What a beautiful day!

Our cooperative farmers cultivate their mountain farms close to nature and extensively, naturally without genetic engineering. The cows graze in summer on the meadows, which are covered with valuable Alpine herbs, and in the winter they eat the sun-dried hay of these mountain meadows.
