This walk will cross the border between Germany and Austria though you will not notice as there are no signs or border stations on the way. It is a one way walk but a 10 min train ride will take you back to the start of the walk.

You can do this walk in either directions. We suggest to go from Lindau to Bregenz. This way you will have the view of the mountains across the lake in front of you during the walk. When taking the train back to Lindau at the end of the walk, make sure to take the time to stroll through Lindau island. You don’t want to miss this lovely place for a break.

We start our walk in Lindau, always staying close to the lake side. From time to time private property forces us to divert away from the lake but always only for short passages. There is a camp site on the way, which during off-season allows staying by the water. In the summer you will need to walk around it.

Half way down the walk you will get to Lochau. Should you find yourself getting tired, you can take a train back to the start of your walk from here. But hopefully you will get to see the entire hike.

When you arrive in Bregenz, be sure to have a look at the stage for the Bregenzer Festspiele. Every year it features an impressive structure set in the lake. There is also a number of markets to visit, regular weekly markets on Tuesday and Friday (at the time of this post) but also a number of other markets for anything the heart might desire.

After a stroll through Bregenz, we take the train back to Lindau. Here we take our time strolling through the little alley ways of Lindau island. Many of the streets are closed to traffic, the half-timber houses are worth seeing and the atmosphere at Lindau harbour is just lovely.
