This hike up Fähnerenspitz in Appenzellerland offers fantastic views across the Alpstein massif and down into the Rhine valley. There are beautiful meadows, pretty flowers and of course, Swiss cows - and all for very little effort.

This is a circular hike starting from Brulisau, Rüte in Appenzellerland (north-east Switzerland).

Top tip! This is a lovely hike for any time of year, but particularly beautiful in the spring.

For most people, Brülisau is the start to hike up impressive Hoher Kasten. But up little Fähnerenspitz leads a quieter and much less exhausting hike than what you find on its big neighbour. This lovely, gently hike offers stunning views of Alpstein and in winter you can do this walk in snow shoes.

Start in Brülisau where there is plenty of parking at the bottom of the gondola. From the gondola station turn east, towards Resspass and follow the sign posts. The path starts out along a quiet road until you reach Horstbach, a little stream.

Follow the stream until the path starts turning uphill through meadows. The uphill is very gentle and there is plenty of opportunity to look around an enjoy the views.

Half way up you will reach a very quiet mountain road, which you follow all the way up to Resspass. It leads through more open meadows, with more stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

At the pass you have the choice to extend the hike a bit by making your way down to Forstseeli. The little lake features a fireplace, some benches and a little hut nearby, a great place for a BBQ, if you are inclined. It’s the same way back up to Resspass.

At the pass, turn onto the mountain path that leads you up the last little section to the top of Fähnerenspitz. On the top you will find a very rough wooden cross and a “Gipfelbuch”. That’s a little book in a tin can that allows all hikers to enter a little comment. But most importantly, you now have an amazing view across the Rhine valley. On a clear day you can see all the way to Lake Constance.

Once you are ready to make your way down, turn towards the side opposite from where you came up. The path is now just a trace in the grass but hiking signs will keep you on track. Continue down through the meadows until you reach a small road, where you turn left.

The path will lead you past several old farmhouses to Chäsmoos, where you turn left and then right again. The path now continues downhill through meadows. In the spring you will be walking through flowers in all colors imaginable along here. And Alpstein comes more and more into views again while making your way down.

After a while you will reach a farm, where you get back onto a quiet road. Follow the signs towards Brülisau, turning right, left and right again at road crossings.

When you are getting close the Brülisau, the path turns off the road for a very last section through the meadows. And then you’re back where you started. You will have no problem finding an ice cream to end this lovely little hike.

  1. I did a slightly different version of this, starting and finishing in Eggerstanden. In the spring, the meadows were full of flowers with amazing views of the Alpstein. The section up to Resspass is particularly nice, even if some of it is along quiet roads.
