This is a wonderfully simple and easy hike starting in the lovely village of Gais. The walk is great to do in winter with snow all around, but it would be beautiful at any time of year. Alpstein is always in view during this hike. There are very few height meters to do and lovely cafes to visit in Appenzell at the end of the walk.

Start the walk at Gais train station and head north through the houses towards the fields outside the village.

Its a steady and easy 100 height meters up to the road leading towards Hütten. On reaching this broad ridge the glorious views to the Alpstein are seen for the first time.

Here, turn right and head towards Appenzell. You could head directly to the town but then the walk would be very short and miss out on some lovely views. So instead, turn left at Pt931. Here is a lovely bench behind a hut. The bench has its own signpost pointing to the bench – all of 3m away, making sure you don’t miss it.

Now head towards Steinegg, crossing some lovely little streams.

When you reach the river Sitter, turn right and follow it into the charming town of Appenzell, to catch the train back to Gais
