The beautiful Murgsee with an exciting ridge to cross
A wonderful hike visiting the beautiful Murgsee and then returning over the exciting ridge between Schwarzstöckli and Gufelstock. It's a long hike, but it can be split over 2 days with the opportunity to stay in the picturesque Berggasthaus Murgsee.
This is a circular hike starting from Engi, Glarus Süd in Glarus (north-east Switzerland).

We parked in Engi and headed along the Mühlebach – lovely to hear the babbling river – and then in just under one hour where we swung left we entered the sunshine.
It was then uphill again, now following the Widersteiner Bach river until we reach Widersteinerfurgglen – a great place to enjoy great views in 2 directions.
And then the it was downhill to the amazingly beautiful Murgsee.
It really is worth to spend a little time here and enjoy the surroundings…
There’s actually 3 Murgsees – we passed by the second Murgsee – the Mittlerer Murgsee.
Reluctantly leaving the lakes we head off towards Murgseefurggel. From here you can shorten this hike and head directly uphill towards Schwarzstöckli – but we headed downhill towards Ober Mürtschen. We think it is worth to take this longer route – it is beautiful.
We turned left again and headed towards Fronalppass – still enjoying the amazing views.
At the pass we turned left and crossed the broad Chüecamm – the clouds were gathering around us!
After reaching Schwarzstöckli (no pictures due to clouds!) we had a choice. We could either head over the row of peaks – Heustock, Chli Hoch and Gufelstock. It is marked blue and white and some care is needed – but not too difficult – just take care. If you don’t fancy this you can take a safer route lower down – it’s around twice the distance and time.
We decided to head over the peaks – it is fun and the views (even with clouds swirling around) were amazing.
At Gufelstock, it was then time to make the long downhill – all 1600 height meters of it! Although it’s long, it was a lovely hike – grassy meadows and then later through the pine forests.
8 hours later we were back at the start! A long hike – maybe better over 2 days – either way wonderful!
