Rebstein – Tobelbach – Altstätten
Easy hike, great views and mini-gorge
This is a lovely short hike along the Rhine valley with wonderful views across to the Austrian Alps. It then heads down through an interesting "mini-gorge" towards the old town of Altstaetten. Perfect for an afternoon stroll!
This hike starts from Rebstein and ends at Lüchingen, Altstätten (St Gallen, north-east Switzerland).

This is a walk that can easily be done in a couple hours on a Sunday afternoon yet still it offers great views of the mountains and even leads through a little gorge. And all of this for hardly any height meters at all.
Start in the center of Rebstein and make your way to Schlipfbach, walk up this little stream, which in spring is framed by wild garlic
Leaving the stream and the woods, stroll across the fields. From here you have a great view of Alpstein, the Austrian Alps in Vorarlberg across the valey and Weinstein castle.
From here turn slightly uphill where the path will lead through fields and a fruit orchard while always having the great mountain views to your left.
Turn downhill towards Marbach and pass a few farms before turning slightly uphill again towards Bruggtobel Restaurant. Now the path leads along the road for a short distance. Soon you will pass a restaurant called Fernsicht, which lose translates to far view and it certainly keeps what the names promises. Soon after the restaurant, turn right to come off the road.
Now the path turns uphill again through some more fields and farms. Soon we reach the high point of the walk at the edge of the woods. Now you have done all the height meters and the path takes you down through the woods.
Soon you will reach Tobelbach and then follow the stream on a small path, crossing several bridges. A bit further along the sides of the stream get steeper until they turn into a small gorge.
Past this little gorge, the woods open up and the path gets a bit wider. Staying along the stream it soon leads into Altstätten from where a bus can take you back to Rebstein. However, if you have a little time left, be sure to visit the old town center of Alstätten, which is small but rather quaint.
