This is a simple hike, but absolutely beautiful. It climbs up to Hüseren to join the Rhine valley high path to Sargans. This is the last section of the Rhine valley path – and one of the most stunning with almost non-stop views of the Swiss, Austrian and Liechtenstein alps. Perfect!
Start in Buchs and follow the path from Altendorf uphill along the Tobelbach stream through the woods. Once leaving the stream, follow the path to Hostet and upwards again to Birentobel.
From Birentobel the path leads through some cute farmhouses, dandelion filled fields and past numerous cows and goats – all with bells of course. You then finally reach the perfectly positioned Berggasthhaus Gemsli at Hüseren.
Once you arrive in Hüseren, you have made it up to the High path. Turn left onto the road in the village and enjoy the views. The hike now flattens off, passing through beautiful meadows, more farmhouses and of course, all the time, stunning views across the Rhine valley to the Alps.
The path now continues along the high path, meandering along the slopes and you will have new and different views at every corner. It also occasionally leads through woods, over numerous tumbling streams, past some waterfalls and across all sorts of bridges.
Towards the end, the path starts to decent into Sargans. When reasching the town, you will be passing by the castle of Sargans and end up at Sargans railway station. From here the fantastically reliable Swiss railway will whisk you back to Buchs.
