We drive through St Margrethenberg and parked in the small parking area at Fürgli and followed the road which gently climbs uphill to Ragiolerberg. Already the views across to the Alps were impressive.

At Pt1483, we turned a sharp left and headed up the broad ridge towards Chimmiberg. The Pizol mountains soon came into view…

… and shortly after, Ringlespitz and Calanda.

Once past the hut at Maton it’s a 5 minute hike to the peak of Chimmispitz – with strangely quite a few stone walls here and there!

We then headed downhill, through the small pass at Bärenfallen and had once more great views of the over the Rhine valley.

It was then a simple downhill stroll through the woods back to the starting point. A lovely stroll for a few hours!

  1. Thanks Elke and Alastair for this nice proposal. We (mum, dad, 4 kids) did it “the other way round”, for no good reason actually. At least we were quickly at the sunny side of the slopes. It was minus 2 degrees when we left the parking lot, so sun was welcome. Interesting change of forest roads, wood paths and sunny summer meadows up to Bärenfallen. Strange little pass, like from forgotten times. Superb view up from Chimmispitz. The entire Rhine Valley was deep in the fog. Poor guys who remained down there all day. We took a short cut just below Chimmispitz and followed the red-white path starting just above Alphütte Maton more or less down to the parking lot. We invested the saved hour for having a magnificent dessert in St.Luzisteig on our way home. Great day, lovely stroll, top tipp!

  2. A really surprisingly lovely hike. In Spring, the upper parts were filled with flowers, with amazing views all around. Took some amazing pictures of flower meadows backed by snowy mountains. Saw no one up there. Did get lost coming back down, path difficult to follow through the woods, but it quickly joined back up with another path, which meant I accidentally cut the walk slightly shorter. One tip, I was hesitant to drive past the sign at the end of St Margrethenberg, which basically says “no cars”. I did anyway, and there was official parking later on, so I don’t understand that sign. Best to ignore it!
