Amazing views over the Rhine valley for such a short hike
For such a little mountain, this short and easy stroll over Holzroderchienberg from Freienbach has incredible views over the Rhine valley towards the Austrian and Swiss Alps. If you have a couple of hours free then go and do it! Fantastic!
This is a circular hike starting from Freienbach, Oberriet in St Gallen (north-east Switzerland).

For such a little mountain, this short and easy stroll over Holzroderchienberg in north-eastern Switzerland has incredible views over the Rhine valley towards the Austrian and Swiss Alps. Fantastic.
We parked in the tiny village of Freienbach, close to Altstaetten. It was an easy and pleasant walk along the gurgling stream of the same name – Freienbach. Spring was definitely in the air – flowers popping up left, right and centre. And cows and sheep with bells.
Just before reaching Oberrieter Strüssler we turned right and headed up over Holzroderchienberg.
It’s a funny little mini-mountain great views, meadows, stone walls, cows with bells – what else would you need?
We then strolled further along the path – it’s really beautiful – and nobody around.
We reached the farm on the other side, turned right and headed back down towards Stein – an even smaller village than Freienbach. It’s then just another 30 minutes down the hill and back to Freienbach. A lovely way to spend 2 or 3 hours!
We did not find any places for food or accomodation on this hike. Take your own supplies!
