If you are in need of some fresh air, but are looking for a stroll, rather than a proper hike, then this walk along the slopes of the Rhine valley might be for you. It leads past Weinstein castle and offers great views of the Austrian and Swiss mountains and in spring you will be walking through a sea of flowers.
Start in the center of Rebstein, where there is parking by the Gemeindehaus. Pass the Gemeindehaus and turn left, uphill on the first road, turn left past the restaurant, then right and right again. Once you reach the bend in the road, keep right and after a few meters, leave the road and make your way up an impressive set of wooden steps. Soon you will reach the highest houses in the village and have a lovely view across the valley.
At the top of the stairs you will reach the road again. Now follow the hiking signs rounding the restaurant and turn left at the next road, which leads through meadows above the village. Soon you will reach the trees, where you turn left into the first path, leading into the woods. After a few meters you will leave the trees again and pass a farm. Turn right and make your way up the cobble road and then left at the top.
Now the path leads gently uphill above the fields and you can enjoy the views across the valley. Once you get to a junction in the path, take the left turn. The path is leveling off now. Walk along, past an old wooden farm, that has clearly seen better days.
Continue along the path, now leading downhill until you reach the road. Cross it and continue along the path on the opposite side. It leads up a small ridge, where you will find a perfectly placed bench under a picturesque tree.
At the tree, turn right and make your way down through a few trees. Once reaching the fields below, turn left across the fields and walk down to the next farmhouse, where you will arrive at a small, paved road. Turn right and walk down to Schloss Weinstein.
Turn left at Schloss Weinstein and the path will lead you above some lovely vineyards, overlooking the impressive Rhine valley. At the next house turn left, then right again and make your way through the trees to the little stream.
Turn right directly after crossing the stream and walk along it until the path ends between two houses in the center of Rebstein. Turn left once you reach the road. It will lead you back to the start of the walk.

Dear Elke and Alastair
I first visited Switzerland as a Girl Guide in 1963 and fell in love with it. Happily my husband of 48 years loves it too and until now we have been going back every year. We are both longing to return but don’t know when that will be possible in the current situation.
Viewing your walks with the photos of the wonderful scenery is very uplifting and we very much appreciate the effort that you make to share your walks with us. Thank you so much.
Hello
Firstly, thank you for your lovely email and kind words. Like everyone, we hope the current situation improves soon and we can all get back to what we like to do. Here in Switzerland, we were actually quite lucky with the lockdown – the only real restriction to going outdoors was in groups less than 5 – so happily, this did not affect hiking.
I hope you can both return soon to Switzerland. Not sure where you normally go in Switzerland, but if you like to try somewhere different then I can really recommend east-Switzerland – very quiet, less touristy, but nevertheless some wonderful hikes.
If you ever need any ideas or help, please feel free to contact us.
Best regards
Elke and Alastair
