Sax – Gams Schönenberg – Gasenzenbach – Sax
Easy, short, fantastic views. Perfect for a sunny afternoon!
This is one of our favourite short hikes. It is very easy walking and has wonderful views of the Alpstein Kreuzberge on one side and a panorama across the Rhine valley on the other. Glorious!
This is a circular hike starting from Sax, Sennwald in St Gallen (north-east Switzerland).

This round walk from Sax has wonderful and diverse views, with the Kreuzberge above and the views down the Rhine valley. It is not a high walk, so chances are that you can do it in any season. And if you do the walk in the afternoon of a sunny day, you will make the most of the sunshine.
Start in Sax, which you can reach by bus or car. This hike starts at Gaditsch, leading up through gardens and small paths across the little stream. If you arrive by bus, you can follow the hiking signs up the hill from Schlössli. There are some lovely old houses on the way up through Sax Underrüti and you see the rocks of the Kreuzberge and Saxerlücke above.
Make your way to Oberrüti, where you turn left when reaching the small road. Soon you reach another folk in the road. Take the right, now the path starts leading uphill and you will get a great view over the Rhine valley.
Once you reach the woods, the path levels off. It’s through the trees for a bit, across a stream and then back out of the woods onto a small road. The road now leads evenly long the slope and there are benches all along here. So a great chance to enjoy the views.
When you get to Schönenberg, turn left at the junction behind the houses and make your way up through Müntschenberg and keep following the road uphill through Matfeder. Once you pass the apple trees and the little farm up here, the road turns left and very soon levels off.
Now it’s a flat walk into Eichlitte, where you pass the three houses on the right and then turn left and downhill into a little footpath. Follow the hiking signs downhill through Gamserberg and down to Haslen.
At Haslen, don’t follow the signs around to the right but instead, walk straight to cross the bridge, then turn right. The road now meanders down through the houses, until it ends in another road. Turn left through the farms until your reach a left bend in the road. The wonderful Kreuzberge are directly in front of you on this section.
At the bend, turn right and at the next bend left onto a path. Now the Gasenzenbach, a little stream into the fields. Follow the stream, with the path switching from between right and left side at each bridge, until you reach a pond. Walk around the pond and cross the bridge at it’s far side. There is a lovely view back the way you came.
Continue along the stream on the other side of the pond until the next junction. Here, turn left. The path now leads through fields and farms all the way back to Sax. Follow it until you see another pond on your right, then take the next left. Now you’re back at the start of this lovely walk.
