This hike up Cima di Medeglia is an little known gem in the Tessin mountains. It is not very long or high but from the top you will have the most stunning 360 degree views. On the way up you will pass through the little hamlet of Troggiano with it’s cute stone huts. And since this is not a well known hike, you can enjoy it as a quiet getaway.

Start at Medeglia, where there is parking along the road and make your way uphill, out of the village. The path leads through the woods, rounding Colma Piana on almost level height. On the other side you will reach a road again, which soon starts going uphill. In the small village of Canedo you will leave the road. The local restaurant seems permanently closed. Follow the path uphill through the woods.

Keep walking uphill though the shady woods until you reach the small hamlet of Troggiano. The path leads straight upwards through it but this is a lovely place for a break. So step through the huts to the right where you will reach a small terrace with a great view. You will also hear the frogs in the nearby pond. There is no road leading here so it is stunningly quiet and the stone huts, partly in ruins, make for a pretty prospect.

Beyond Troggiano the path turns wider and passes through some more woods, before reaching open fields higher up. Pass a farmhouse and turn right, uphill in the field behind the house.

After passing through a few more trees, the path flattens of. Turn right around a hill and you will see the cross of Cima di Medeglia just ahead. Very soon you will reach the top with it’s amazing views.

Once you have thoroughly admired the view, make your way down on the opposite side. You will come to a wide path leading to the right along the hillside. Follow this path and enjoy the views.

The wide path now follows the contours for quite a while, allowing for some great views and easy walking. You will pass several right turns leading to Medeglia and Isone. Ignore them all until you reach a wide, paved military road where there is a right turn. Take this turn and follow the road for a short while until turning off it in a sharp bend. Make your way down to Isone.

Isone
Isone

In Isone follow the road for a short stretch before turning off to the left. The path now leads through meadows and woods above the Vedeggio river. Shortly before reaching Medeglia, you will pass a bridge.

Stay on the right side of the river and after a short uphill, you will be back at the start of the hike.
