There are walks that are at their most stunning in a certain season. And while the meadows around Sulzberg are amazing in spring, this walk is lovely at any time of the year. We usually start this hike in Schnellersand walk towards Weiler-Simmerberg through the Hausbachklamm.
We follow the stream past waterfalls and weirs through the shady woods until we reach Weiler at the end. The Hausbachklamm gorge path also offers an adventure playground, which makes this walk exciting for children.
In Weiler we turn towards Oberreuthe, a lovely little village that invites to sit down for a break below its beautiful church. The church was built in the 18th century and is open daily.
In Oberreuthe, pass the Freibad (or stop here for a refreshing bath during the summer) and take the Hochsträss path which leads past the Wildrosenmoos, a marshland with an amazing diversity of plants, such as Gentian and Orchids. Past the moor we turn into a road that leads along a ridge to Sulzberg.
Here we can enjoy stunning views of the alps. Plan some time to stop and admire. We marvel at the views and the flowers in the meadows, passing farms and the occasional restaurant on our way to Sulzberg.
Once we can tear our eyes away from the views, we make it into Sulzberg. There are two cafes to choose from for a well deserved ice cream or cake or Kaiserschmarren. Both cafes offer lovely views of the mountains. So this will be the most difficult part of the walk – choose which cafe to visit.
Once you’ve had your refreshments, pay a visit to the Sulzberg cheese shop which sells the local Käserebellen cheese and a number of other local specialties. It is well worth seeing.
From Sulzberg we make our way back down towards Schnellers, which is downhill and not far to walk.
