This is such a stunning hike, we have created 4 variations (the other 3 will be posted soon!) – each of different length and height meters with some using the nearby gondolas. This hike is the longest, does not us the gondolas and is a full-day hike – but every step is worth it!
We started in the village of Moos where we were staying and headed towards path number 3 and the Lärchenhütte restaurant. This takes just over 1 hour and is a great place to stop for a break.
It really was a lovely stroll through the larch woods and the amazing views across to the Zwolferkofel were opening up more and more.
After 2.5 hours we reached the top of the Monte Elmo gondola and the Helm restaurant. It was a busy place, with plenty of slides and attractions for children, but as soon as we headed towards the Hahnspielhütte it was again quieter. At the hut we turned left and enjoyed amazing views and colours looking into Austria.
We were the soon at the old abandoned world war 1 building on Mount Helm.
We then simply continued strolling along the broad ridge, passing the Silianerhütte and reaching the second peak on this hike, Hornischegg. The views were simply stunning and we hardly noticed the distance!
Eventually we reached the Schwarzsee and this is where we turned right and headed downhill.
We were now facing the Diolomiten mountains again with the occasional farmers hut…
.. and slowly entering the beautiful larch forests.
We soon arrived at the Klammbachalm hut – seemingly specialising in home-made yoghurt – delicious!
It was then another 1.5 hour walk through quiet pine forests to return to Moos with tired legs. But worth it – a simply stunning hike!
