Alpine meadows, the charming town of Appenzell and the river Sitter
This is a wonderful gentle stroll from Weissbad in Appenzellerland. It passes through woods and meadows to Appenzell with fantastic views of Alpstein and then returns to Weissbad along the babbling river Sitter.
This is a circular hike starting from Weissbad, Schwende District in Appenzellerland (north-east Switzerland).

This is a short and easy stroll from Weissbad to Appenzell and back. It allows enjoying the fantastic views across Appenzellerland and of Alpstein while having to put in very little effort. And it misses the crowds that can usually be found closer to Alpstein.
Start in Weissbad and turn eastwards, climbing gently into the meadows and woods above Weissbad. The views all around are simply stunning.
The path continues along the slopes above Appenzell, through (in the summer flower filled) meadows, shady woods and past a number of cute wooden houses. This is really Appenzell at it’s best.
Then finally you reach Appenzell. This beautiful town is well worth a visit and a stroll through the stunning historic houses. And not only because there are ice cream shops in the town center.
Walk past the church and cross the river Sitter, then turn right along the river. The path now leaves Appenzell and is back in the meadows, following the stream.
If you brought your swimming gear, you can stop off at the Appenzell badi (outdoor pool) for a cool down. The path keeps following the Sitter all the way back to Weissbad, so you could also just dip your feet in.
The path stays level along the stream and Alpstein will always be in your sight on the way back to Weissbad, so it’s a very relaxing end to this beautiful little walk.
