Libingen – Schnebelhorn (1291m) – Chrüzegg – Libingen
A fantastic hike along a broad ridge
This hike is one of our favourite hikes - it leads along a very broad ridge from the highest peak of the Kanton Zürich (Schnebelhorn) up and down over easy peaks to the great viewpoint of Chrüzegg - all with incredible views in all directions.
This is a circular hike starting from Libingen in St Gallen (north-east Switzerland).

This is a wonderful ridge hike, which takes you almost all around Libingen. There are several peaks on the way, including Schnebelhorn, but since you are already high up on the ridge, there is not much effort climbing them. The views are great all the way around and the height meters are spread out enough to make this an only medium effort hike. Very lovely for a hiking day in any season.
Start at Libingen, which can be reached by bus. There is also parking just before reaching the village. From the parking, make your way up the road right in front of you. This will lead gently uphill, with the views opening up on the way. There is little traffic along here, so you can really enjoy the walk.
Half way up you will come to a farm, where there is more parking. Now the hike turns onto a forest track and there is no more traffic. Keep walking uphill. There are a few steep sections to conquer but eventually you will get into the woods and soon after onto the ridge.
Walk a bit further and very soon you will leave the trees. There is still a slight uphill but soon it is fairly even along the ridge with wonderful views all around and Schnebelhorn in front of you.
When you get to the foot of Schnebelhorn, you’ll see the Meiersalp where you can stop for a quick drink or bite to eat. From here could walk straight up. But this path is all through the woods, therefore this hike turns to the right, leading along the face of Schnebelhorn, until reaching the north ridge. Turn left and walk up along the ridge until you reach the top.
On the top of Schnebelhorn, turn left along the ridge. There are usually quite a few people up here and the occasional donkey. Make your way through the crowds, until the path leads downhill for a few height meters. It’s up again on the other side and past a wooden shed. Directly behind the shed, turn left, walking uphill along the ridge. Soon you will be on the top of Schindelegg. It’s a lot quieter here and the views are stunning!
From Schindelegg it’s onwards again and soon another small downhill. At the next junction, the hut Gasthaus Alp Schindelberg is just below you. A popular little place for a refreshment, if in need.
After the restaurant it’s a little uphill again to the top of Rossegg and the path then leads along the top for a little bit, allowing for some more views. On a clear day, there are so many peaks visible from here, you won’t be able to count them. Our recommendation is the peakfinder app to identify what you see (we have no connection to the app, we just use it).
From Rossegg it’s a slight downhill again and then around to Ober Habrüti. Once you walk past the cross just above the path, there are some lovely views across to Berner Oberland. The path now leads along the slope again, very evenly.
Further along it’s into the wood and now there is the last noticeable uphill to conquer. Soon enough though, you will leave the woods again and find yourself on the last meters up Chrüzegg. From the top you have an amazing 360 degree view. There is also a bench, though this is rarely free.
On the other side of Chrüzegg it’s a gently downhill with more views and soon you will arrive at the Berggasthaus Chrüzegg restaurant, which has plenty of outdoor seating. At the restaurant, turn left between the buildings and stay right.
Continue along the path with only little up and down until you see the Schwämmli restaurant to your left. You actually need to stay above the restaurant, though it is only a few meters down to it, if a break is needed. Stay above the hut to a junction above on the right. Make your way around the little peak of Alplispitz and turn left directly behind. It’s a few more meters uphill here, until you reach the meadows below Chellenspitz.
At the next junction you could stay on the right, along the tree line and enjoy the view from Chellenspitz. Or you stay on the left and cut directly down through the fields. Both paths will meet again shortly after.
Continue along the path following the sign posts, until you get to the Restaurant Alpli hut. This is a slightly quieter affair than Chrüzegg, but with no less stunning views and a few chicken roaming around. Turn left behind the hut and stay on the dirt road. Follow this road down, which will soon lead into the woods and turns into a path. Now it’s downhill through the fields and past some farm houses, until you are almost back in Libingen.
The very last section leads steeply down to the river. This bit can be rather slippery, so be careful along here. Once you reach the streams below, cross the bridges and make the last tiny uphill into Libingen.
