This is a very short but wonderful walk through the stunning Aare gorge and would be a suggestion for a wet and rainy day or if you only have a couple hours time. The walk is not free since the upkeep of the paths needs to be paid for but it’s well worth the entry price (for prices you can consult the official website).

There is an east and a west entrance for the gorge. You can choose the one closest to where you are traveling from. However, this hike starts from the west entrance, which is very close to Meiringen and where there is plenty of parking at the entrance.

Make your way through the ticket office and out the other side. There is now a short walk to a steel door and then you are stepping into the gorge.

The Aare gorge is up to 200m deep and in the tightest place just over one meter wide. The walk leads mainly along wooden planked paths, most of which hang directly above the water.

The walk continues through the gorge and takes about 40-50 minutes to the other side. Some sections of it lead through tunnels. Since it can get wet and slippery in places, it is suggested to wear good foot wear and take a rain jacket.

Towards the end, the path starts leading slightly uphill. Note that wheel chairs and push chairs will not be getting through all of the gorge.

Once you reach the other side, you will have a lovely view along the Aare river before leaving through the eastern ticket office.

To return to the start of the gorge, you can use the train. The train fare is included in the entrance price. However, you can also walk back. For this, turn right when exiting on the east side, the path turns uphill after a few meters. It now cuts across the road a few time before reaching the top of the hill. Then it leads into the woods and gently back down on the other side. After about 40min you will reach the west entrance again.

The Haslital, one of the large valleys in the central alps, stretches from the Grimsel Pass to the Lake of Brienz. The flat valley floor of the lower Haslital is separated from the upper valley by a transverse rock formation. Over thousands of years, the Aare River eroded a path through this rock formation resulting in a gorge which is 1’400 metres long and up to 200 metres deep.
