Well known for skiing – less well known for hiking. All the better to discover beautifully quiet mountain strolls!
Vorarlberg is a state in western Austria that is almost entirely made up of mountains. It shares a border with Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Germany, part of this border is down the centre of the very pretty Lake Constance. The capital of the state is Bregenz, a town that is often also seen as the cultural capital of the area. In winter the famous skiing areas around St. Anton and Lech are well visited and in the summer, the peak of Pfänder offers stunning views across Lake Constance.
Most importantly though there are hikes for all fitness levels to be found in Vorarlberg. From a short stroll along a lake to a long hike up the mountains, there is something for everyone. And the famously cosy Austrian mountain huts invite for numerous refreshment stops on the way.
This wonderful hike starts in Bad Laterns and visits 2 peaks - Hoher Freschen (2004m) and Matona (1998m). There are not only fantastic views from the peaks, but also, all the way up, between them and down again - a great, great hike!
A fantastic circular hike in Bregenzerwlad through alpine meadows with colourful flowers and cows with bells. It's a steady climb to Winterstaude but you'll be rewarded with incredible views.
This is a wonderful hike over the the peak of Hochhäderich and then along an exciting ridge to the next peak of Falken. The hike then continues along the Bolgenach river and then finally a through a fascinating river canyon to return to Hittisau.
For a bit of maritime feeling in the middle of the mountains, this little stroll is just the thing. It is relaxing, offers beautiful views of the lake and most importantly: there is ice cream at the end.
This walk offers a relaxed stroll to see the old Rhine flowing into lake Constance, cross into the Rhine delta nature reserve and pass strawberries fields and an apple farm. And of course in the summer, it is well worth taking a break at the beach.
This walk in Vorarlberg, western Austria has only 700 height meters are to be conquered but the views are incredible for almost all of the walk! Plus it´s short enough to fit into half a day if needed.
The Hohe Kugel in Vorarlberg, western Austria can be hiked from many directions. The route from the Fraxern football field is one of the best with views over the Rhine valley all the way to the summit. Perfect!
