Lago di Braies – Kuehwiesenkopf – Grünwaldalm – Lago di Braies

This beautiful hike leads up to Kuehwiesenkopf, an undeservedly unknown little peak with stunning views. It then leads down to the cosy Grünwaldalm hut and then to the famous Lago di Braies.

Park your car at the lowest of the Lago di Braies parking lot, cross the road onto a walking path and make your way down until the turnoff to the Steinwanterhof hotel. Take the path twards the hotel and follow the hiking signs through the houses. The path now starts leading gently uphill.

The views get better as you slowly make your way uphill and there are benches along the way to take a break from time to time. Enjoy this easy walk uphill, it will get steeper later on.

After a few turns back and forth along the gravel road, you will get to a set of huts. Afterwards the road does a few more turns and then you need to turn into a small path on the right. Make sure to watch out for it or you’ll miss it.

The next part is rather steep and a little exhausting but well worth the effort. You have to conquer about 300 height meters to get to the ridge but you can take breaks on the way up and enjoy the views around.

When you get to the ridge, you will know what all the effort was for. There are some great views around in all directions. Follow the path to the left until you get to a wooden fence, follow the path along the fence and then up the last height meters to the top.

There is plenty of room on the top, so find yourself a spot to sit and enjoy the view. It really is amazing.

Once you are done admiring the surroundings, take the path to the right of where you came up and follow it down to the Kuehwiesen hut. Here you could make your way back down into the valley directly, but it would be a real shame to cut the walk short.

Instead, turn right towards the Kaserhütten huts. The path leads through the woods for a little way and then you will arrive at the huts. Now the path leads slightly uphill towards a pass and then to Grünwaldalm hut.

At the pass you get to enjoy some lovely views again. And there is plenty of room to find a seat and have a break. From here it is downhill towards Grünwaldalm. The path is fairly easy, but there is a short section of about 20m through a steep gravel slope, which may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Afterwards though the path continues easily towards the hut.

The cute little hut invites for a break and refreshments before you make your way down to the lake. Once you arrive at the water, you could turn left and take the short way back. However, Lago di Braies is such a stunning lake, that it is well worth turning right and taking the long way around.

When you arrive at the end of the lake, follow the road down until you arrive back at the parking at the start of the hike.
