This wonderful hike is equally enjoyable in either direction. The amazingly efficient Swiss public transport system will get you between the start and end points, regardless of how you complete this hike. Or you can make it a longer hike and complete the loop back to the starting point – lots of options!
We started the hike in Filzbach and took the chair lift to Habergschwänd. From here we headed slightly downhill through glorious autumnal colours…
into Hinter Tal and towards Talalpsee…
This is a glorious lake formed by a glacier many years ago. A tip! Try and time your hike so you can view the sunshine – we got it slightly wrong and it was in shadow (although still very impressive). We then climbed out of the valley into beautiful sunshine…
and the impressive surrounding mountains.
We then headed up to Fronalppass where the views change again – toward Klöntalersee…
and the Glarus giants – Tödi and Clariden.
We then headed towards the Naturfreundehaus Fronalp for a well-earned drink.
You can take a bus down from here and return to Filzbach. But it was such a glorious day, we decided to hike back to Filzbach. There are various possible routes – each with great views.
A lovely hike however you do it!

I did this hike on a very hot day and it took some effort. I did the whole loop from and to the top of the chairlift, which I really recommend. So many different views! The section connecting the Naturfreundehaus to the chairlift is called the Schabziger hohenweg, and is very nice, although you will need to put in plenty more height metres. Completing the whole loop, I ended with 17.7km, 1200hm, 5 hours. Beware that there is no other refreshment place until the Naturfreundehaus when doing it clockwise. There are easy options for families to stroll down to the Talalpsee from the chairlift.
