Neuenalpspitz

Laui – Windenpass – Neuenalpspitz (1816m) – Laui

160

This is a wonderful hike to the quiet end of the Toggenburg. The highlight of the hike is the slightly exposed ridge to Neuenalpspitz with amazing views of Alpstein, the Churfirsten and Gräppelensee.

This is a circular hike starting from Laui, Alt Saint Johann in St Gallen (north-east Switzerland).

Top tip! The exposed part of this hike is not too bad, but you will need to take a little care...

On this wonderful ridge walk to Neuenalpspitz, you have great views of Alpstein, the Churfirsten and Gräppelensee. You need to be sure footed as the walk is exposed and a bit rocky in places, but it’s well worth the effort.

The hike starts at Laui, which may be one of the most beautiful places to park in the Alps. From the parking turn back along the road from where you came and take the first road on the right, leading to Gräppelensee.

Walk steadily uphill until eventually the road evens out and leads through fields until you reach the little lake. After the Gräppelensee, turn right and make your way up to Windenpass. The views are great right from the start, with Säntis visible to your right and the Churfirsten behind.

Continue steadily uphill for quite a while until you reach Windenpass. There is a small, wooden, self-serving hut on the way, where you can buy a cold drink.

When you reach the pass, turn left. From here you are hiking along the ridge with more wonderful views. You may find walking a bit trickier along here, as it is a very rocky ground to navigate. Eventually though, you reach a peak at 1817m from where you can see Neuenalpspitz in the distance.

From this peak you have a wonderful view all around you and you can see the ridge ahead, which offers much easier walking. Still along the ridge but on a grassy path, you now walk towards Neuenalpspitz. There is a bit of gentle downhill until the path rises again for the final peak.

Once the uphill starts, the path meanders around rocks. Steadily make your way along the rocky ridge until you finally reach the top of Neuenalpspitz and enjoy the view!

Now it’s downhill. Continue along the path until Schlofstein. A couple of bends lead down to a forest track, which you follow until Oberstofel. Here you are back on the road that leads to Gräppelensee and then on a known path back to Laui.
