Amden – Speer – Durschlegi – Amden

141

A wonderful hike through pretty meadows and pine forests to the top of Speer - with fantastic 360 degree panoramic views to marvel at from the top

This is a circular hike starting from Amden in St Gallen (north-east Switzerland).

Top tip! If you like to make this hike a little longer, you can walk from Amden to the top of the chair-lift. It's around an extra 300 height-metres - but a lovely stroll through meadows.

Speer is a very impressive mountain top and this hike takes you there with little effort and fantastic views along the way. On a clear day you can see from Lake Constance all the way to Jura. And the ridge at the top of Speer is rather impressive.

The hike starts in Amden from where you take the chair lift to Niederschlag. If you feel motivated, you could also walk to the top of the chair lift, the great views start in Amden.

When you arrive at Niederschlag, turn right on the gravel road. Now starts a very gentle walk through a marshy natural landscape to Hinter Höhi. When you reach the fork at Hinter Höhi turn left.

Now starts a mountain path that leads around Mattstogg but stays very level. Along the way, Alpstein comes into view. On the other side of Mattstogg, the path starts leading uphill towards Oberchäseren hut.

When you arrive at Oberchäseren hut, Speer is right in front of you. There is still a steep slope to conquer to get to the top. A mountain path leads uphill in countless serpentines. At the hut you can decide if you stop for a refreshment before starting on the steep uphill or if you save it for when you come back down. Or you just do both.

On the steep last slope up to Speer, views of the Walensee valley open up, a good reason to stop occasionally and take a look around. And soon you will reach the visitors platform on the mountain peak.

The views from the top are amazing. There is not just an amazing 360 degree panorama but also the impressive ridge that leads south from here. There is actually a path leading along this ridge. Hard to believe it’s possible to walk across it.

Once you have had a break and have marveled at the views enough, make your way back down to Oberchäseren hut. At the hut turn right and make your way down the valley to Unterchäseren and then turn left, where the path leads into the woods.

The gravel road leads gently downhill through the woods. While you progress along the path, the views of Walensee open up. Once you reach Durschlegi, you will leave the woods and have an amazing view across the lake.

  1. A really great peak to do and not too difficult. Slightly longish walk back through the woods, and then you turn a corner and are greeted with amazing views of the Walensee. Plenty of benches and a grill place to enjoy the views there.
