Saxerlücke

Sax – Saxerlücke – Mutschensatell – Zwinglipass – Wildhaus

140

This lovely hike climbs up from the Rhine valley to the Saxelücke pass. It then turns left to the great view point of Ruchbüel, down to Zwinglipass and then finally to Wildhaus - one of the quieter areas and most beautiful of the Alpstein.

This hike starts from Sax, Sennwald and ends at Wildhaus (St Gallen, north-east Switzerland).

Top tip! As you approach the Kreuzberge look out for climbers! It's a favourite area for climbing and more often not you'll see some brave souls in action.

This hike is rather long with no shortage of height meters that need to be conquered but it does pay back for the effort. There are the fantastic views at Saxerlücke, Mutschensattel and Zwinglipass, the occasional hut for a cold drink, more views and then there are some more views. So if you are feeling fit, this is a great hike to do. It’s in Alpstein after all!

The hike starts in the little village of Sax, which can be reached by bus. Looking up towards Saxerlücke, the first goal of the day, there is an impressive mountain “wall” to get up, but don’t worry it is not as steep as it may look and the path is fairly easy to walk.

After leaving the village, the path soon leads into the woods and winds uphill with only an occasional view of the valley. However, once halfway up, you will walk through lovely open meadows and can enjoy views all around.

Once you finally (finally!) reach Saxerlücke, catch your breath and enjoy the little break, you have done the hard part of the walk. From the pass you can see down on the other side towards Bollenwees and Fählensee. But the most stunning view from here is that of the Kreuzberge rocks towering above you, a favorite photo object.

At Saxerlücke turn left and make your way up towards Mutschensattel. The pass leads up a very gentle valley, the impressive Kreuzberge rocks on your left. Halfway up the valley there is the Roslenalphütte where you can get a cool drink served by very lovely people. Past the hut continue upwards until you reach Mutschensattel.

There is now the option to cross the pass and make your way down the other side. But why lose all that altitude again right after having gained it? So turn right at the pass and make your way along Chreialpfirst ridge to Zwinglipass. And enjoy the views!

Once you reach the pass, the path actually turns left but before continuing, make your way to the right of the pass to look down onto lake Fählensee below.

Turn back towards the pass and then make your way down to the Zwinglipass hut, a good option for another stop. Then continue downwards past the Teselalp hut.

Past Teselalp hut follow the even road along the valley, through lovely meadows until you reach a farm gate and bench. Here the path turns left, leading steeply down the narrow Flüretobel valley. At the end of the valley, turn right at the junction and very soon you will reach Wildhaus. From here you can take the bus back to Sax.
